Governor's correspondence, 1896-1899.

These letters document the administrative activities of Governor William O. Bradley. Included are requests for repayment of outstanding bills for supplies for state troops; letters concerning mob violence over railroad taxes; correspondence with Frankfort's sheriff about armed men disrupting the General Assembly in the Capitol building; and correspondence concerning the murder of a Mrs. Bowden on the railroad.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard.
